RPL in Action

Experienced trainer and long-standing member Keith Taylor AFAIM recently attained a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment at AIM entirely through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

Mr Taylor is a First Aid Instructor with the Queensland Ambulance Service, and required the qualification due to changes in training and assessment competency standards within the industry.

He approached AIM seeking RPL assistance, and based on evidence of his wealth of experience and knowledge was awarded a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment within two weeks.

AIM RTO Manager Sandra Elliott said that Mr Taylor was an ideal candidate for the RPL process.

"Keith provided evidence of his extensive experience as an instructor. After mapping out his competencies in both training and assessing that he has honed through years of practice, he was approved with a full qualification straight away," Ms Elliot said.

Mr Taylor has been a First Aid Instructor within the Queensland Ambulance Service for over 10 years, over which time he has trained 30,000 people in first aid, through ten different courses that he leads. Prior to this, he served in the Queensland Fire Service for 34 years, rising to the position of Acting Area Director for the Gold Coast in 1997.

Mr Taylor spoke highly of the Institute's reputation and credibility as a Registered Training Organisation.

"I believe that AIM is the most respected RTO in the nation and anyone who completes a qualification through them benefits from their credibility," he said.

"The RPL process was very thorough, but I get a lot of satisfaction knowing that it's thorough and that my existing skills meet the prescribed requirements of the qualification," Mr Taylor said.

Mr Taylor also holds a degree in Public Sector Management from Griffith University.

With a long tenure in emergency services, Mr Taylor is in demand as an instructor and mentor. He also undertakes various speaking engagements, has received an Award for 40 years of service as Justice of the Peace, and has received an Australia Day Award for services to the community.
