Managing Your Mind for Total Calm

In a world of busyness and great change, a major theme has emerged – the need for managers to stop and be mindful and attentive in the moment.

Recent academic and practitioner research has emerged which explores the concept of mindfulness and how this major therapeutic application in psychology and behavioural health pertains to management practice.

Leading this work is management professor, psychologist and consultant Dr Andrew Hede FAIM, who has spent many years exploring mindfulness. His intensive work has resulted in a program and exercises in mindfulness specifically for busy managers.

“Mindfulness is a special way of purposefully focusing our full attention moment-by-moment. Essentially, it’s an advanced form of self-awareness which is the key competence in emotional intelligence,” he explains.

“My research led me to a comprehensive new model of the psyche that is the first to explain precisely why mindfulness is effective.

“This formed the basis for the development of Total Calm, an innovative approach to managing stress and emotions at work,” Dr Hede said.

Dr Hede is presenting the Total Calm executive stress management program in May 2010, in collaboration with the Australian Institute of Management.

This exclusive four week program starts with a weekend intensive at the luxurious Sheraton Resort and Day Spa, Noosa, where participants will learn the skills to achieve ‘total calm’ each day. It concludes with a follow-up workshop at AIM in Brisbane that will focus on monitoring progress and adhering to stress reduction practices.

“The program is capped at 14 participants with 2 presenters and designed specifically for executive managers and senior professionals. It provides new insights into your own inner dynamics as well as proven techniques you can use to reduce stress and increase wellbeing in your daily life on a sustainable basis,” Dr Hede said.

Dr Hede’s breakthrough theory and take on mindfulness will feature in the prestigious Journal of Management Development in February 2010.
