Frequently Asked QuestionsQuestions
................................................................ AnswersThe best way to confirm eligibility for the GSC postgraduate programs is to complete the Application for Admission (see Admission) or contact a GSC staff member on (07) 3227 4873. 2. How many intakes are there in a year? The GSC offers three face to face trimesters per year. Applicants may gain entry at any trimester intake for face-to-face delivery. Distance applicants may commence a twelve week unit of study any Monday of the year. Intensive mode is offered according to a published schedule. Face to face and Intensive classes are run subject to student numbers. 3. In which subject should I commence my studies? The GSC has developed a suggested sequence of units and recommends that students follow that sequence which commences with Managing People. However, applicants may gain entry into the GSC programs commencing in the subject of their choice if that supports individual learning and professional development needs. 4. How long will it take to complete the programs? Students typically complete one unit per trimester. The Graduate Certificate Professional Management can be completed in approximately 16 months, the 6-for-6 program in approximately 24 months, and the Graduate Diploma Management Innovation program in approximately 32 months. Students can fast track the completion of a program by enrolling in more than one unit per trimester at the discretion of the GSC Academic Director. 5. When are the face to face lectures held? Face to face lectures are held after-hours from 6.00pm to 9.00pm at AIM Management House. A light evening meal will be supplied. Intensive courses are held over 4 consecutive days from 8.30am to 4.30pm with an additional fifth day follow up. The GSC has a commitment to small class sizes, typically between 6 - 15 students. 7. Can I change delivery modes once a unit has commenced? Students may not change between delivery modes once a unit has commenced. However, students may change modes on commencement of a subsequent unit. 8. Can the GSC tailor a program for my organisation? Tailored corporate programs can be devised and delivered to organisations seeking to significantly upgrade the skills of middle to senior managers. The GSC will work with organisations to customise course material for ‘best-fit’ learning that matches organisational culture and goals. Delivery schedules are carefully created to provide an ideal learning intensity for participants, which means the course or program can be as concentrated or intermittent as is required by the organisation. 9. What is expected in terms of workload? Although individual unit requirements differ, it is recommended students complete 6-9 hours of self-directed study per week for each subject in addition to attendance at lectures. This would include reading, preparation for lectures and preparation of assessment pieces. 10. Can I gain credit for a unit similar to one offered by the GSC? Credit may be granted for courses completed with other post graduate educational providers at the discretion of the GSC Academic Director. It is essential that the subject for which credit is being sought has significant similarity in terms of student learning outcomes as well as depth of content. 11. Can I enrol in a single course of study? Students can enrol in any unit offered by the GSC as a single unit of study for professional development. The student may then choose to seek enrolment in the broader programs. 12. What does the assessment involve? The format of assessment differs between each unit, but generally it involves a combination of class participation, workplace reports, projects and examinations. Report writing assessment tasks are based primarily on the student’s organisational context and experience. Assessment is at post graduate level and requires academic referencing and evidence of having read and synthesised the literature on a particular discipline. ................................................................
