Paul Grabowsky

Barry Hankinson AFAIMPaul Grabowsky AFAIM, composer, conductor, jazz musician, pianist and artistic pioneer, is the Australian Institute of Management - Qld & NT's Creative in Residence.

Paul is regarded as one of Australia's foremost screen composers with credits for numerous film and television scores including The Fine Art of Love, Empire Falls, Human Touch, Phoenix, Innocence, Jessica, The Jungle Book 2 and Last Orders. Paul's works for the stage include the opera Love in the Age of Therapy and the multimedia production The Theft of Sita. Opera Australia has commissioned and produced his opera, Love In The Age Of Therapy with libretto by Joanna Murray Smith.

In 1994, he founded the Australian Art Orchestra, with which he has performed in India, Singapore, UK, Finland, Denmark, Germany, Czech Republic and Mexico.

He produced and presented the television series Access All Areas between January and October 1996, and was Commissioning Editor for ABC Television Arts and Entertainment from November 1996 to 1998.

Paul was the Musical Director of Tonight Live from 1990 to 1992. For the 2000 Sydney Olympics, he was a composer for the opening and closing ceremonies and the Musical Director for the Paralympics Closing Ceremony.

He has made many recordings since his first jazz trio album in 1986. He recently released his first US recording, entitled Tales of Time and Space with jazz giants Joe Lovano and Branford Marsalis. His song cycle Before Time Could Change Us, commissioned by the Queensland Music Festival was released in 2005 by Warner Music, and features the voice of Katie Noonan. It won Paul his fourth ARIA award. He has been the recipient of an AFI awards, two Helpmann awards, a Deadly award and was Sidney Myer Performing Artist of the Year in 2000.

Paul is a Commissioner of the Australian Film Commission. In 2005 he was appointed Artistic Director/CEO of Queensland Music Festival.

Creative in Residence

Paul’s role at AIM is to introduce the notion of creative endeavour into workplaces and board rooms around the country and to merge the disciplines of creativity and management.

Paul will undertake specific activities on behalf of the Institute, such as contributing a chapter to the highly successful Management @ Work series of books and deliver a public lecture in late 2007. Paul will be engaged by organisations from within the AIM corporate family to share the concept of creative endeavour and aid them in embedding creativity in their business.
