AIM Executive In ResidenceJoan Sheldon AM FAIM
Mrs Sheldon acts as an ambassador for the Institute, providing mentoring to senior executives in business and government. Combining a diverse set of professional skills and experiences gained in a variety of roles in public life over the past 20 years, Joan offers an unique and comprehensive insight into business strategy and government relations. Most well known for her political life, culminating in becoming Deputy Premier and Treasurer for Queensland, Joan has previously been a business proprietor, professional/business association leader, spokesperson, lecturer and is a wife and mother to three children. Joan was elected into politics in 1990. In 1991, she was elected Leader of the Queensland Liberals, making her the first woman to lead a political party in the State. From 1996 to 1998, Joan was Queensland's first female Deputy Premier and Treasurer. She was also the first woman to lead the State as Premier. Joan retired from politics in 2004. In 2005 she was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia for her services to the State, Women and the Arts. In 2006 Joan was appointed Adjunct Professor at the Sunshine Coast University. Since retiring from politics, Mrs Sheldon has joined as Chair a number of not-for-profit boards including that of the Queensland Ballet. Joan’s Executive in Residence role with AIM allows her to keep a close association with the Queensland business community. Her interests include women in business, ethics in commerce, governance and executive development. Joan is currently undertaking a Master of Business Administration.
